•  How to stop busting your credibility

•  ‘When people feel they can trust you, a seismic shift happens’

Sandy Allgeier

Managers stuck in their careers may be pouring the cement around their own shoes because of a lack of credibility with bosses, coworkers, and clients, says Sandy Allgeier, management coach and author of “The Personal Credibility Factor.”

“It’s not one thing. It’s a combination of actions that make you a believable person or someone who can be trusted,” says Ms. Allgeier.

The problem is very simple, she says: If people don't trust you, they won't work with you.

But the solution is a lot harder.

Personal credibility is judged by your actions, she says. What you do — and don't do — determines other people's perceptions of whether you have it.

"When people feel they can trust you, a seismic shift happens in your relationships,” she says. “Everything improves: your marriage, your relationship with your kids, your relationship with colleagues and coworkers.”

(Sandy Allgeier talks about personal credibility, how to lose it, how to regain it and how to build it in today’s CVBT Audio Interview. Please left-click on the link below to listen now to right-click to download the MP3 audio file for later listening.)

Ms. Allgeier says change happens with small steps – from being punctual to fulfilling commitments. “They all work together organically," she says. "You're removing roadblocks, one by one, and once they're gone, you'll be amazed at the abundance that flows into your life."

Ms. Allgeier says she developed her book based on the hundreds of coaching and training sessions she’s had with managers. Prior to beginning her consulting business in early 2000, she put in over 25 years as a human resources professional with such companies as Providian Corporation and KFC Corporation as well as serving as senior vice president of human resources for Atria Assisted Living with 7,000 employees located in 26 states.

She is also a national faculty member and facilitator for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), where she helps develop and educate HR practitioners across the United States. Her major focus today is on assisting organizations with developing their current and future leaders.
