• No reports of problems, it says
Sconza Candy Company of Oakdale says it is voluntarily recalling some of its products because peanuts that were used might have been contaminated with salmonella.
“We have had no known illnesses reported to date in connection with these products,” the company says.
The recall was initiated on products made using peanuts manufactured by the Peanut Corporation of America in its Plainview, Texas, plant after the FDA announced the recall of those products.
Sconza says its Alpine Trail Mix, Organic Chocolate Peanuts and Organic Toffee Cashews and Peanuts that were distributed from Jan. 1, 2007 to Feb. 10, 2009 are involved.
The peanuts in them have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, Sconza says.
Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
All the products were distributed nationally and many may be in the vending trade, Sconza says.
The Organic Chocolate Peanuts and Organic Toffee Cashews and Peanuts are made both in packaged and bulk forms.
Consumers who have purchased the product are urged not to consume them.
