•  ‘Being a manager is a stressful position’

Being a manager is not an easy task. It requires the ability to manage multiple employees, to fill out loads of federal- and state-mandated paper work, and to track multiple tasks, all while trying to keep corporate bosses and employees satisfied enough to not create problems.

Now the University of the Pacific is addressing the problem by offering a community class in leadership for managers.

The new program offered by its Westgate Center for Management Development is designed for new managers. It reviews proven techniques for becoming an effective manager who can satisfy the needs of employees and customers while also handling multiple projects at once. The classes start Sept. 29 and will be held every Tuesday night until Jan. 12, 2010.

“Being a manager is a stressful position that can be made worse by not knowing how to manage employees, customers and time effectively,” says Peter Johnson, director of the Westgate Center. “The class is centered around the idea that certain skills not only can make someone a better manager, but that these skills can also make a manager’s job less stressful.”

The classes will be held on Pacific’s Stockton campus during the evening to make it more convenient for those who cannot get away from the office during normal working hours.

The cost is $295 per class or $1,750 for all 14 weeks. Organizations that enroll multiple employees are also eligible for discounts.
