• Offers early retirement plans to 300
• Would take effect next month
As many as 300 people now working for Merced County government will be offered the chance to retire early, the county says.
It’s an effort to trim payroll costs without making mandatory layoffs.
The buyout approved this week by the Merced County Board of Supervisors would pay those taking the offer one week’s pay for every full year of county employment up to a maximum payout of $20,000.
Workers have until Dec. 4 to let their supervisors know they want in and would have to leave their jobs by Dec. 19.
