•  Regents approve 32 percent increase

•  They blame the Legislature

Undergraduates studying at the University of California, including its two Central Valley campuses in Davis and Merced, will have to come up with a lot more money for “fees,” the university’s euphemism for tuition.

The university's board of regents on Wednesday approved increasing student fees by 32 percent over the next year.

The university says it has to raise fees because the Legislature has cut subsidies to the system.

The increase would bring the basic yearly academic costs at the University of California to more than $10,000. The total does not include room, board and books. Individual campuses may tack on their own fees.

Students in 44 University of California professional schools will see fees increase between 8 percent and 65 percent, depending on the program.
