• Central Valley Democrat calls for president to create more Valley jobs
• More water, plus spending on highways, high-speed rail
The federal government should make more water available to farmers and spend more money on highways and other infrastructure projects if new jobs are to be created in the Central Valley, says Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, in a letter Thursday to President Barack Obama.
“Today’s job summit at the White House is important, and I commend the President for holding it, but our Valley needs more than a summit to fix our economy and bring people back to work,” says Mr. Costa.
Mr. Costa says he also hopes that the Obama Administration will include community bankers in the ongoing economic recovery dialogue. “They need to be given the appropriate tools to continue lending to small businesses and consumers. Their participation will be essential to any long term economic growth,” he says.
“The water crisis and a meltdown in the dairy and housing industry have helped created the perfect economic storm,” says Mr. Costa said. “The jobs summit may be a good forum for sharing ideas with the President, but we need action now.”
