• Layoffs not ruled out
• Decisions expected in late March
Faced with state budget cuts, California State University, Fresno must shrink in size to where it was in 2000, campus President John Welty says.
In his annual address Tuesday to faculty and staff to start the spring term, Mr. Welty says he does not expect layoffs in the current fiscal year, but he cannot rule out cutting staff later.
“Simply put, Fresno State must shrink back to the size it was in 2000,” Mr. Welty says. “Our budget is being reduced to the figure we had in 2000. And with a smaller budget, we must reduce the number of students we serve and, correspondingly, the number of faculty and staff.”
He says the number of new students admitted – already down by 1,000 this school year – will be reduced by another 2,000 students in the fall.
Once the campus has more information about the 2010-2011 budget, a determination will be made on whether it is necessary to proceed to layoffs, he says.
“Reducing the size of the university is the reality we face,” says Mr. Welty. “And as we carefully consider the challenges and changes we face, we will do all we can to minimize the impact on our campus community and on our mission to educate students.”
On Feb. 5, a budget summit is scheduled with campus leaders to outline a proposed budget plan and ask for feedback. After a review of suggestions, Mr. Welty says he will issue a tentative plan in early March.
