• Huge prison hospital could ease overcrowding
• A Billion dollar project for Central Valley city
Construction is getting underway on a $900 million prison hospital on the southeast side of Stockton, about two miles from the Stockton Metropolitan Airport.
Local opposition to it was quelled when the state agreed to spend $3 million for road improvements in the Stockton area along with about $700,000 in school improvements.
The huge project will mean thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, say state officials.
Watch our report here:
Jobs at the completed facility are expected to generate about $220 million a year in salaries and benefits. And the prison facility will have a relationship with the county’s general hospital in nearby French Camp for more acute care, which is seen as helping with its finances.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013, with the first prisoners arriving in the winter of 2013-2014.
