Starting a small business and working it from home can let women have both career satisfaction while raising a family, says Lesley Spencer Pyle, a Spring, Texas, mother who took that path 12 years ago.
The founder and president of HBWM.com Inc. (Home Based Working Moms), Ms. Pyle says working at home helps moms continue their professional pursuits but in a more flexible and accommodating way.
Ms. Pyle, whose pre-family career was in public relations and marketing, says one of the toughest hurdles to clear for mothers starting home-based businesses is marketing.
But another is even more basic: Deciding what to do.
“The first one is deciding what they want to do,” she says in a CVBT Audio Interview. “Finding the right home business … is usually not instant. It’s not something you can just automatically start a business and know it’s right for you.”
