The National Kidney Foundation of Northern California and Northern Nevada has opened its first office in the Central Valley to help combat rising levels of chronic kidney disease and boost local outreach, education, and screening efforts.
"As many as one in every nine adult Californians -- nearly 3 million people -- has chronic kidney disease though a majority don't know it," says Margie Black, director of the foundation’s new Sacramento office.
As part of its outreach program, the foundation is sponsoring a kidney early evaluation program for Fresno on May 12.
The free health screening includes checks of blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as urine screening.
It’s designed for adults with diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease or family history of those diseases.

The foundation is also sponsored a 5-K non-competitive walk on May 19 at Victory Park in Stockton to raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation's programs and services.
