• Comcast to launch its service
• Enters market with two major competitors
There’s no paucity of companies that provide telephone service using the Internet to route calls (VoIP), but the biggest, Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) is moving into Elk Grove as it continues its Central Valley expansion.
Two other firms already are there with their own VoIP networks: SureWest Communications (NASDAQ: SURW) and Frontier Communications, a unit of Citizens Communications Co. (NYSE: CZN).
Comcast says its “Digital Voice” residential phone service will offer unlimited direct-dial local and domestic long-distance calling, including Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, Web access to voicemail, enhanced 911 service, and a dozen other features.
Comcast is launching its phone service throughout the Central Valley using a phased approach. Since March, the service has been turned on in Sacramento, Stockton, Merced, Modesto, Fresno, Visalia, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Chico, Marysville and Yuba City. Comcast says it anticipates launching Comcast Digital Voice to its remaining communities, including Biggs, Gridley, Corning, Willows and Orland in the next few months.
