Two Central Valley television stations, recently purchased by Newport Television LLC, are firing staff.
KGET-TV, the NBC affiliate in Bakersfield, has fired about 10 workers. None was an on-air reporter or anchor.
KGPE-TV, the CBS affiliate in Fresno, is letting three workers go.
In Bakersfield, KGET operates two additional channels from its broadcast complex. One is the CW affiliate and the other programs Telemundo Spanish language programs. Together, the operation employs 75-100 people.
Newport Television, based in Kansas City, Mo., recently completed a buyout of the 56 TV stations owned by Clear Channel Communications Inc. (NYSE: CCU).
Layoffs are companywide and will eliminate about 162 jobs. The company says the layoffs were part of its plan in buying the Clear Channel stations and also reflect a weakening economy.
