Central Valley small businesses honored

•  SBDC Network Announces Small Businesses of the Year

•  “These business owners are making a difference in their communities”

The Central California Small Business Development Center Network, hosted by the University of California, Merced, is honoring five small business owners who embody America’s entrepreneurial spirit.

The small businesses of the year are:

• Hibernation Hearth & Home, Sonora;

• Marty Pay/Farmers Insurance, Tehachapi;

• Southern California Medical College, Bakersfield;

• Thermal Energy Solutions, Bakersfield; and

• Ulzi, San Luis Obispo.

“These business owners are making a difference in their communities, and we are very pleased to honor their achievements,” says Diane Howerton, regional director for the Central California SBDC Network.

Each recipient will be recognized during the Small Business Recognition Program from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, at Tornino’s Restaurant, 5080 N. Blackstone Ave., Fresno.

The scheduled guest speaker is Richard Sudek, executive director of UC Irvine Applied Innovation. Mr. Sudek is an active angel investor and is chairman emeritus of Tech Coast Angels, the largest angel organization in the United States.

In 2015, the UC Merced SBDC leadership and consulting team assisted more than 4,000 entrepreneurs with technical assistance and business workshops. In addition, new equity capital invested and loans for SBDC clients total more than $40.5 million, with 116 new businesses started and 1,253 jobs created and/or retained, it says.

UC Merced was awarded the SBA contract in 2003 to serve 14 counties in Central California: San Luis Obispo, San Benito, Monterey, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Kern, Mono and Inyo. The network’s mission is to promote the development and growth of small businesses by providing high-quality business assistance.
